Catching a Glimpse of the Salt River Wild Horses

Crouching in a small Mesquite covered thicket at the Coon Bluff Recreation Site along the Salt River, I could feel myself holding my breath, trying not to make any unnecessary noise.  My husband and I were told that a small band of horses had been seen working their way towards the mesquite thicket where we were waiting. We had, on several different occasions, journeyed a hundred miles from our home in Central Arizona to the Salt River just to see the horses, but had never been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the mysterious creatures. Being able to photograph these broncs was a bucket list item for me and I did not want to do anything or make any unnecessary noise to scare them away.  Within minutes, just as we were promised, we could hear the sound of hooves ascending up a small bluff just above the river, and with a flick of a horse’s tail, I caught my first glimpse of these legendary animals.
